Goal Setting
Why do we need to set goals?
Have you ever got in a taxi and been asked "where to?". The answer is probably yes. What would happen if you replied "Any where"?. I think you would be told to get out and stop wasting the driver’s time. However most people go through life without a destination in mind. We can go through life not realising the importance of goals and we become a ship without a rudder. We go round in circles, passing the same place, achieving the same results and end up feeling frustrated.
One of the most important things in goal setting is knowing where you want to be or understanding what the end result look like, before you start. You should be able to see this with crystal clarity. What does the end result look like? How does it feel? What will it do for you? You should be able to visualize it in every detail. Only when you can do this are you likely to achieve your full potential.
The next step is to write it down. When you do this ensure that it is written in a positive way, like" I will weigh 12 stone by Saturday 1st May". This goal has total clarity and nobody would be unsure of what the goal is. It also has a time scale. This is a key area for goal setting. Without time scale I have a wish and delude myself into thinking I have set a goal, however I have no real commitment and will undoubtedly fail.
So to recap on successful goal setting:
- Make a clear, specific goal
- Write it in a positive way
- Set a deadline
- Back it with persistence
Why do we need persistence? Because we will fail and fall, life is full of ups and downs. The winners keep going even when they have been knocked to the floor. Failure is a lesson for winners to be, the quicker you learn that the quicker you will achieve your goals.
Good luck and see you at the top!
